With Miami Art Week in the rear-view mirror and Frieze LA ahead, we want to share our tips on how to make the most out of your art fair experience.

Get ready for lots of time on your feet.

At any fair, you will have no problem getting your steps in for the day. So be ready with comfortable shoes and an open mind. You will most certainly find yourself circling back a few times to a booth that really piques your interest. If you have more than one day, even better, so you don’t have to cram everything in. Don’t forget to take breaks often by enjoying a snack or an espresso as you wander the fair.

Know before you go.

There are so many great resources out there, from art-specific websites like Artsy, Artforum, or ARTnews, to blogs or even your trusted friends at Art Muse LA. There are many opportunities to learn about featured art at a fair. Perhaps you will see a work that resonates with you online and can give you a starting point for when you get to the fair. Don’t try to see everything all at once at the fair. Pick some “must-see” booths. Remember, though, some of the best gems are the ones you never expect, so use your research as a tool, not the “be-all and end-all” of your fair experience.

Don’t be afraid to chat.

Fairs can be intimidating! Some galleries may feel cold or standoffish, but don’t be afraid to talk to gallerists, ask questions, or inquire about pieces. As an enthusiast or as a collector, most galleries will be happy to discuss their work with you, and if you are in the market to buy, you can ask questions about their program, specific works you might be interested in, or even upcoming shows.

Use the fair as a chance to learn.

A fair is an amazing place to get a feel for the market, which artists or galleries are popular, and what trends might be coming down the line. If you’re an art lover or an avid collector, it’s a great place to learn about what’s happening on a wider scale. Or, if there’s an artist you discover, use the fair as a chance to begin tracking their work. You never know who you might find and where that might lead.
