PART 2 | Reconsidering Two Baroque Masters: Gentileschi & Leyster

The artistic legacies of 17th-century Baroque painters Artemesia Gentileschi and Judith Leyster are exceptional in the truest sense of the word. They each trained as an artist at a time when the profession was not open to women, yet each produced distinctive paintings that are regarded as masterpieces of the Baroque era. Gentileschi, working throughout Italy, knew fame (and infamy) in her own lifetime. In contrast, Leyster's celebrated career at the height of the Dutch Golden Age was nearly extinguished after her death. Art Muse Lecturer Noelle Valentino will explore the innovative—indeed, radical—development of each artist's painting practice.
